Key takeaways

  • The gut produces 90–95% of serotonin — the “feel-good” hormone. So digestive health directly shapes mood, energy, and sleep.
  • Constipation is missing a daily bowel movement, hard stools, or no movement for 3+ days. Untreated, it’s linked to weight gain, acne, brain fog, and hormonal imbalance.
  • The fix is mostly food and movement, not supplements: 2 L water, daily fibre, healthy fats, daily probiotics, and 15–30 minutes of movement.
  • One client lost 10 kg in 3 months once we addressed her gut — just by adding fibre, hydration, and a daily walk. No medication needed.

“If your gut is happy, you are happy.” It’s not just a saying — it’s a scientific reality.

Have you ever noticed that when your stomach isn’t clear in the morning, your thoughts feel blocked too? That’s the gut-brain axis at work. Everything begins in the gut — digestion, nutrient absorption, mental clarity, even glowing skin. The gut is called the “second brain” because it produces 90–95% of serotonin, the body’s feel-good hormone. A healthy gut sets the tone for your entire day, affecting your mood, energy, skin, digestion, and sleep. Gut health is one of the most overlooked pillars of overall wellbeing.

What counts as “normal” digestion

Every individual has different bowel movements. For some, passing 1–2 movements a day is normal; for others, every other day may be fine. Constipation is difficulty passing stools, passing hard stools, or no bowel movement for over 3 days. Untreated constipation and poor gut health can lead to irritability, anxiety, brain fog, low mood, and even poor sleep.

Chronic constipation is the root cause of many issues — weight gain, skin issues like acne, poor detoxification, and hormonal imbalance. It is a commonly neglected issue in busy adults with sedentary lifestyles.

“The first place to check when you’re struggling with fatigue, resistant weight, anxiety, or dull skin? Your digestion.”

— Reena Poptani, Clinical Dietitian

A real client story: 10 kg lost, no medication

The most common reason for stubborn weight gain is, in my experience, constipation. One of my clients weighed 110 kg and struggled with persistent constipation. Her diet lacked fibre, water intake was low, and physical activity was almost nonexistent. We made small, consistent changes:

  • Incorporating fibrous foods like wholegrains, oats, fresh veggies
  • Drinking at least 8–10 glasses of water per day
  • Making 30 minutes of daily movement non-negotiable

Once we addressed her gut health, her constipation improved — and she lost 10 kg in just three months. No supplements. No prescription medication. Just better food and movement.

7 evidence-based ways to support your gut every day

Small, daily habits compound. These 7 are the ones I see make the biggest difference for my patients in clinic, in order of impact:

1. Eat fibre-rich food

Dark green leafy vegetables, oats, whole grains, flax seeds, papaya, guava, and pear regularly. Choose whole fruits over juices — you keep the fibre that way.

2. Hydrate properly

Fibre without water actually makes bloating worse. Aim for at least 2 L per day. Buttermilk, soup, chia seed water, lemon water, green smoothies, and coconut water all count.

3. Add healthy fats

Olive oil and desi ghee in your meals lubricate digestion. Don’t fear good fats.

4. Daily probiotics

Curd, buttermilk, or kanji to increase the good bacteria in your gut. Aim for at least one probiotic-rich food daily.

5. Avoid refined food

White bread, sugar, and maida-based items contribute to constipation and inflammation. They feed the wrong bacteria.

6. Move as much as possible

Lack of movement makes digestion sluggish. A 15-minute walk, HIIT session, or gentle yoga stimulates the intestines and eases digestion.

7. Warm water in the morning

Add jeera, ajwain, fennel seeds, or cinnamon to boost metabolism. Soaked raisins and figs are a traditional remedy. Bonus: drink it in Malasana (squat pose).

The bottom line

Whether you’re struggling with fatigue, resistant weight, anxiety, or dull skin, the first place to check is your digestion. A happy gut is not a luxury — it’s a necessity. Clean eating, mindful movement, and consistent habits can heal more than just the stomach. They restore balance across your whole system.
